CHEM 490 - Polymer chemistry

An introduction to polymer chemistry, Lecture topics include discussions on the interrelations between molecular and gross physical properties; polymer structure; methods of polymerization; polymer development; and Industrial applications for polymers. Laboratories provide hands-on experience in synthesis of polymeric materials.  The course include Introduction to polymer chemistry through a study of step and chain polymerization and copolymerization as well as block and graft copolymers. Study of the properties of polymerization techniques in solution, emulsion, and microemulsion. Polymer structure and characterization with an overview of the properties of commercial polymers.   Prerequisites: CHEM 307 and permission of program director. 3 hours lecture and 3 hours lab per week
